The Issue
Our industry, recreational boating, is experiencing a shortage of properly trained and skilled people. We are looking for 500 new people to enter into various training programs by 2010.
One of the main shortages is Marine Engine Technicians, people to service and repair the millions of boats in Ontario. Due to retirement and other contributing factors, there are simply not enough properly trained technicians to fill the void.
The Solution
To address this serious problem, we created an awareness and recruitment program called Careers in Boating.
Training options includes 1 year post secondary certificate programs as well as apprenticeship training. Three colleges currently offer both these options: Georgian, Canadore and Sault.
Your School
In order to create awareness of the many career opportunities in our industry with secondary school students and their teachers, we have created a number of promotional pieces. These include 2 brochures and a DVD, all of which can be ordered on-line, via email or phone.
In addition to the students, we would like this material to also go to:
Co-op and OYAP Coordinators, Tech Teachers and Guidance Counsellors

You can also order this material via phone at (705)549-1667 or Email.
Any assistance you could provide in helping us get our message to the right people (students and faculty - tech, co-op, OYAP and guidance) would be greatly appreciated.
School Presentations and Campus Tours
We are also available to conduct presentations at your school as well as set up tours of the campuses which offer training. Tours are proving to be a great way to generate excitement and ultimately increase enrolment in the programs.
Coop Placement and OYAP Program
We are actively seeking coop high school students across the province for placement at any of the 450 OMOA marina members in Ontario.
We can help set up the placement and will assist with coordinating between the schools, boards, students and businesses.
The OYAP program is a superb fit for our industry and we will work with OYAP coordinators to help place students into one of our members businesses.
Contact Information
To help us communicate with the faculty and staff at your school, we need to gather contact information. If you could complete this form (Secondary School Faculty Contact Form) that would be greatly appreciated and help us to communicate more effectively with your staff and they, in turn, can pass along information to interested students.
Other Career Opportunities in Industry
There are many career opportunities out there for high school graduates and our industry is one they may not have considered. In addition to needing more qualified technicians the industry needs people in all areas of operation.
Many techs go on to management, sales, manufacturing, distribution, or other exciting occupations.
If you have any questions and/or would like to set up a visit to your school/facility or campus tour, please do not hesitate to contact us (contact information is provided below).
Thank you.
