The Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA), in partnership with Georgian College has created the '5 X 10' fundraising campaign to assist with the development of the NEW Recreational Boating Centre of Excellence.

'5 X 10' represents the goal to have 500 students enrolled in Georgian's Marine Engine Mechanical Techniques program and Small Engine Mechanical Techniques program (MEM/SEM) by the year 2010.

With plans to open in October 2007, the Centre will be built on the Midland Campus of Georgian College.  The cost of the new cnetre is in excess of $1,200,000.00.

The goal of the OMOA is to raise $500,000.00 over the next five years for the campaign.  During the launch of the 5 x 10 fundraising campaign, the OMOA committed $50,000.00 and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) agreed to contribute $100,000.00 over the five year timeframe.

OMOA 5 X 10 Fundraising Campaign was launched at Deerhust December 2006 with contributions from OMOA and NMMA. From left to right Mike McKeown, OMOA President, Brian Tamblyn, Georgian College CEO and President and Linda Waddell, NMMA Canada VP Northern Shows

The issue of skills shortages within the marine industry has become more obvious and these shortages are becoming more critical. Al Donaldson, OMOA Executive Director and Brian Tamblyn, Georgian College President and CEO share the same views that over the next five to 10 years, retiring workers will outnumber those entering the workforce. More than half of Canada's current skilled tradespeople are exected to retire whithin 15 years. By 2020, Canada could be short one million workers. By creating the 5 X 10 fundraising campaign, OMOA is being proactive to counteract this situation.

OMOA is encouraging all involved in the marine industry to get behind the 5 X 10 campaign and strongly support it. Afterall, it is for the future of your business!
