Marine Engine Technician Training Programs (Colleges & Apprenticeship)

Post secondary Marine Engine Technician programs are available at several colleges in Ontario. These are highly recommended to establish a solid understanding of the position and prepare a foundation for continued learning .

Apprenticeship training, where up to 80% of your time is spent actually working (and getting paid!) is very valuable and a great way to learn the business and increase your value as an employee.

Colleges

Currently, there are three (3) colleges in Ontario offering a post secondary marine mechanic technician program.

Georgian College - Midland

A one (1) year certificate program is called: Mechanical Techniques - Marine Engine Mechanic. It is delivered over 2 semesters (fall and winter), starting in September. There is also a four (4) week work placement at the end of the program.

Georgian College

Sault College - Sault St. Marie

This program is called the Marine and Small Powered Equipment Mechanic - Basic. It is a certificate program over a 24 week period, starting in late October.

Sault College

Canadore College - North Bay

This is a 43 week diploma course called Motive Power Technician - Marine and Small Powered Equipment.

Minimum requirement for entry into all of these programs is Grade 12 (or a Ministry approved equivalent). Graduates can go directly to find employment in the industry or continue their educational process. Ideally, these will be "pre apprenticeship" programs with graduates moving into jobs within the boating industry (marinas, manufacturers, dealers, etc.) and enrolling in the apprenticeship program.

Apprenticeship Training

The Marine Engine Technician apprenticeship program involves:

  • 4280 hours of "on the job" training (over approx. 2 to 3 year period)
  • 720 hours of in school training (3 eight week in class sessions - Levels 1,2 and 3)

The following colleges currently offer apprenticeship training.

Fleming College (Lindsay)
Sault College (Sault St. Marie)
Canadore College (North Bay)

Four other colleges in Ontario are currently eligible to offer apprenticeship training but are not at this time.
